How Video Games Can Heal

How Video Games Can Heal

Everybody is struggling with something. For each of my own trials, I can name a video game that provided a comforting escape from reality when I needed it.

The same week that Sky debuted, I had discovered a stunning revelation about who I am. My history and identity changed in an instant. I was overwhelmed with a deluge of existential fears, a deep sense of loss, and somehow, excitement over this discovery. I picked up Sky for some respite. What I found was a world built on the values of empathy, generosity, and consent. The realms of Sky provided a safe space to anonymously share my struggle with new friends. Friends who, like Sky itself, were generous with their time and sharing of encouragement.

Because Sky, and the friends that I have made there, were there for me in a time of need – a wonderful imprint has been made upon my heart. Until then, video games had provided a sort of passive relief where, at best, I could relate to the characters and their stories. But Sky provides something new. A world where we can all share, be heard, and offer light to others. I am forever grateful.
